Yelling at concrete - August 2025

Mid year, it's time to go.

Intro

Greetings to August, now if it could kindly get stuffed and become Oct i would be a happier and cooler bear. So this month has been a bit hectic and I’ve been trying to plan for the future of the year among other things. See below.

Catch up

Some of this news letter is me simply reminding myself what I even posted this month.

First up I shared the new painting “vulture” I tried to share it in a few ways this time, as still and as timelapse because lets be real we have no idea what works with the social media any more. It’s why the news letter even exists! It’s a mixed media work and in doing it found some energy for following it up with another and working on a piece for a friend. So expected some more gradual teasing and work progressing our through the next six months.

I also shared July’s calendar illustration. Which brings us to a topic of the calendar.

Calendar 2026

Something I have been mulling is the 2026 calendar. Not in a bad way but last year due to my hand injury i got caught short. Ended up doing a reboot year and I did enjoy visiting the old work I wanted to do something grander and see if I could push an idea I had. So this is your warning the 2026 one may be slightly different…

Patreon

Something I’ve been getting into more as well is updating the patreon. It started as simple idea to do it monthly but keeping it consistent is creating a consistent record of projects which is handy for me as well!

As a reminder if you’re wanting behind the scenes and work in progress stuff you can get it there. It’s very cheap basically $1 a month and helps fund the projects!

Scunthorpe Zine fest

That’s right! It’s zine time. If you didn’t know it’s Scunthorpe Zine Fest this month so if you enjoy DIY print and culture you should consider checking it out! Sadly for US folks it’s not local but for people I know in the UK it’s easy to get to and free to all! It’s in it’s third year and gives creatives in North Lincolnshire access to an accessible creative space at no cost to them. It’s something I’m learning to be proud of and going into it’s third year.

You can find out more about it’s setup and how it’s funded and supported there but mostly I’d ask if you’re interested you show up or share it if you know someone who might be into Zines!

Website update

If you followed that link you may also notice.

I updated my website! www.grahamcooling.co.uk or www.yellingatconcrete.com both should get you to the same space. I took some time with my injured arm to update all the side and portfolio, add new work and teasers for future work and invested a little in myself. Something I’m trying to do this year is move away from “product” so to speak and just exist as an artist making occasional one offs and maybe short runs. As the handling of taxes and promotion of things is really not something I’m good at I like the idea of being a little more personality based and elusive with my work.

Podcast

Sat down this month to talk through the little concept of imitation. I read a book recently about drill music “deeping it” which I thought was not only interesting on the history and criminalization of ‘Drill’ but on how we communicate as artists and how each medium has it’s own rules on what you can and cannot “borrow” for inspiration.

I also got to talk to Adam Dougherty! He’s a creator i’ve actually followed for a while. Running a workshop our in Colorado he’s known for practical effects, oddities and really putting passion into his work. He’s a super talented guy and made for an interesting chat about the industry the state of younger workers entering it and how Artists often are choosing the breadline over something paying to allow them to follow their interests.

Coming soon - Colony Collapse

Recently on the patreon I shared an update for a coming project. Called Colony Collapse it’s one i was really excited to work on and had been an idea for a long while I’d just not had the time ore resources to explore it. But I’ve actually finished the work now and over the coming month will be releasing short updated on how it was made before giving you all a good look at my new sculpture!

Other than that I hope you stay safe and look after yourselves. Thank you for reaching out if you did about my arm it’s healing nicely. I have about five weeks left before the bone should be nicely done and I’m getting more mobility back daily.
