The April round up of Yelling at Concrete
It’s the end of April? How on earth did that happen?
To say April is long it does feel a little sparse of things posted by myself. But really that’s because i’ve been working on things! It’s the time of year when i start planning the second half of the year and in doing so usually ends up with me isolating from the world to create things. At the end of course if feels like I achieved nothing but in reality I probably did.
So this month I thought i’d share some secrets of what i’ve been up too.
Table of Contents
Scunny Zine Fest.
In August! it’s approaching fast we’ll be enacting the second Scunthorpe Zine fest so this month I’ve been meeting with the key people to make that happen!
We’ve been chatting the illustrator we chose and making sure we have some entertainment lined up. The main item to decide this year was when we’d be opening the flood gates to applicants which we decided will be in May!
It would be lovely if you’d give the event a follow and a share and support the event as it is fully not for profit and a bit of a passion project for me even when I’m on the other side of the world!
New tube
At the start of the year I began a little project. With me cutting back on podcast episodes part of the idea was to give me some room to create other video work. The problem with that of course is creating other video work is very time consuming compared.
Either way that said I think we’re getting there. I’ve been recording and editing since the beginning of the year and in doing so slowly bringing together an idea which I really hope you’ll enjoy. That’s all for now but keep an eye out as we may be stepping past the podcast veneer once again.
Die & Obey
Now this is an interesting one. I recently posted an glimpse at a design i’m working on and in doing so thought what a novel idea it would be to simply tell you the title. Well there you go! It’s a continuation of the comatose and compliant series and that’s all I’ll really say about it for the moment.
The podcast
This month I did three episodes and took a bit of a risk.
First off I met up with WTF Pots, An artist i’ve been following for a while since she was recommended to me and a creator with some real skill at getting a rise out the public. With grotesque and often funny creations It’s hard to not be entranced by the sheer body horror of her clay.
This inspired me so in a homage to George Carlin’s Seven things you can’t say on TV piece I got up from the desk and performed a scripted monologue around the idea of what you can and cannot talk about on YouTube. The idea being that our over sanitization of online spaces means the often important topics get crushed by frivolity and items with lack of substance as that’s “Safer”.
We then capped of the month with what resulted in quite an intense experience for me personally. The firs time I’ve had a guest cry during the interview I sat down with Warren Wright. Warren came to my attention through the simple stop motion work he create with barbies and vintage dolls. Recreating movies scenes and songs but behind that he’s a talented artist and creative who has been through a number of struggles and likes to get honest and open about how those moments have impacted his work. The man sure can chat so having him on was a pleasure and a really important experience to talk through life and appreciate the people behind the “content”.
As always thank you for reading and following my work. I’m hoping to get some more progress going in May and maybe even get the store in motion again so keep an eye out and until then i’ll talk to you guys later.
Graham
